The gold standard

WHAT IS A DEXA SCAN?

DEXA (dual x-ray absorptiometry) scans are the most accurate way to measure body composition. A DEXA scan uses two types of low-level radiation to measure body fat percentage, lean muscle mass, and bone mineral content. You'll receive a detailed breakdown that includes regional analyses and symmetry assessments.

FAQ

WHEN WILL I RECEIVE MY RESULTS?

You'll receive your scan and an assessment of your results in a single 30-minute session. Our clinicians will help you interpret your results in a post-scan consultation.

ARE DEXA SCANS SAFE?

Bone density and body composition scans are painless, non-invasive and use a very low dose of radiation compared to standard X-rays.

WHY SHOULD I HAVE A DEXA SCAN?

DEXA scans are used to measure total body composition and fat content with a high degree of accuracy. It can help athletes monitor physical changes, while those interested in their overall health and wellness can gain insightful information about their body.

DEXA scans can help to identify bone disorders such as osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis.

DEXA scans are recommended for women before the onset of menopause due to the increased chances of developing osteoporosis. Research has shown that women start losing bone mass earlier than men, and health care practitioners recommend monitoring changes to help mitigate risk factors.

HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR A DEXA SCAN?

We recommend wearing loose, comfortable clothing without metal buttons, snaps, or zips to your appointment.

Avoid taking calcium supplements or other over-the-counter (OTC) vitamins 24 hours before your scan.

If you've had other types of imaging tests within 24 hours, please get in touch before making your DEXA scan appointment.
